From Hillbilly Runner on Tue, Jan 31, 2012 at 16:58:58 from 207.162.186.231

Only in my "Dreams". If everything stays together and I'm heathy and injury free I'll be shooting for somewhere between a 3:20 and 3:15. We can only hope for the weather and conditions we had last year! All I know is whatever happens it'll still be a great time !!!!

You be careful out there, don't go and get a cold or something, its but 47 days till Boston! I will surly be glad when my recovery advances enough so that I can really get into some speed work. Until then I can't even think about putting a challenge out there for Boston. But like the last time we were there I said, If you stumble I'm gunna beat you to the finish line!!!!!

From Hillbilly Runner on Wed, Feb 29, 2012 at 20:29:26 from 207.162.187.86

Surprisingly good. We went to a wedding and a reception last night so I didn't get in bed any to early but the legs felt great. Have you got us a list of things to do in Boston?

From Tom Slick on Sun, Mar 18, 2012 at 14:46:52 from 69.171.160.18

I was just thinking about what we are going to take in while were there! I'll give you a call this week and we should toss up some ideas. Do you want to do a Red Sox game? I want to do the Kennedy Library, how about you? Well have to get over to Cheers, you know there are two of them? We'll have to hit the oldest operating tavern america and doing the Freedom Walk is always really neat. Plus we have to go to the POST Boston Marathon race party, this time I'm gunna dance with everybody! So lets talk and figure out what else we wanna do...........

From Hillbilly Runner on Sat, Apr 07, 2012 at 06:27:03 from 207.162.187.46

You bet, feeling guilty about not running, checking the weather forecast several times a day, little aches and pains just pop up, ect. I'd say my madness is in full swing.

gotta love taper phantom pains...

From Hillbilly Runner on Sat, Apr 07, 2012 at 10:09:20 from 207.162.187.46

Now, I not only have the "phantom taper pains" I've got a foot that's swelled up and bruised. A dang ole' horse decided to jump on it this morning. It's to early to tell if it's going to be a real issue in 9 days or not. Right now it doesn't hurt to bad as long as I don't move it.

From Tom Slick on Sat, Apr 07, 2012 at 10:29:17 from 69.171.160.25

Oh man, this is the kind of stuff that just happens at the wrong time. Hope it's not a broken bone...that comuld make matters ugly! Give us an update as soon as you can. This kinda takes the interst of the weather to a low importance level!

From Hillbilly Runner on Sat, Apr 07, 2012 at 11:45:11 from 207.162.187.46

I'm going crazy. I thought it was getting better and the swelling was going down so I thought I'd get up and walk around. Not to bad, I thought till it started swelling more than before. Now it's back to elevating it and putting ice on it. I'm running Boston even if I have to cut the darn thing off.

Great morning to run sunny and in the 40"s. I gave the foot the test today and everything seems to be OK as long as I don't make any lateral moves. My little toe is still sore and the base of my toes are still swelled  but I can live with that. I'm still a little concerned that this may give me some problems in the later miles of the marathon but I'm staying positive that it won't.

Boston 5K what fun !!!!!

Total Distance
26.20

Let me start by saying this was a Great Boston even though I had a very bad marathon and it goes without saying a horrible finishing time to prove it. Enjoing this great race is so much more than the marathon itself. It's starts from the road to qualifying and all the dreams you dream as you put in hundreds of miles training, to all the people you meet in the airports as you make your way to this historical race. It's the excitment in the air at the Expo and all the runners cramming in their last carbs at the pasta dinner. The waiting in lines to hurry up and get on the buses for the long ride to Atheletes Village only to wait again. Then it's time to make your way to the corrals and the last trips to the POP's. Then the wave starts moving and you're off and running and you realize that after all this time it's time to do what you came here to do "Run".

I can't say enough about all the volunteers and the hundred of thousands of people cheering all along the way. When you're stuggling and having to walk you get to meet a lot more of these people and at times this is all that kept me going.

This years Boston experience started off with meeting up with Tom Slick at the Raddison then off to the Expo. That night I enjoyed a wonderful Chinese meal with Susanna and Larry, Teena and Ryan, Lark and Jeff, Marcie and her son Jeff , Mindy, Lloyd, Andy and his wife Becky and some others I didn't get to meet. After a good nights sleep we were up and ready to run (jog) the Boston 5K. I didn't know if this was going to be a good idea but after doing it I think it's a good way to get the legs going again and it's a blast to do. Then keeping with our Boston tradition it was back to the room for a very relaxing 2 hour nap and then off to the Pre-marathon Pasta party with some friends. After a good nights sleep it was time to meet everybody for the walk to the buses and the long ride to Athletes Village.

Now, to the good, the bad and the ugly about the marathon. I'll keep this very short, even though it was probably the longest 4+ hour of my life. After going over and revising (because of the weather conditions) all our race plans that we had trained so hard for the last 4 months to accomplish it was time to head to the starting corrals. Lloyd, Teena and myself dropped off our bags at the buses and made the walk down the hill to the buses. Lloyd left us to make his way to his corral as me and Teena made one last quick pit stop at the POP, as we got back to the side walk we heard the announcer say it was 2 minutes till the start of our wave and we were still a ways from our corral. As time was running out we got in the closes corral we could which was the one behind were we were going and with one quick move and a catch me if you can look Teena darts in as the guy tells her she can't and the second wave was off. I had planned to stick with my orginal MP for the first few miles and then as thing got hotter I'd back off and try and hold a 30 to 45 second slower pace the rest of the way "BAD IDEA". The first 8 miles went pretty good but I never did feel like I got relaxed and into a groove so I kept backing off and off till the wheels finally fell off about mile 14. About that time with my mind in a fog I hear the cheers "GO TOM SLICK" and out of the corner of my eye I see a red flash and sure enough it's old glory himself. With a determined look and a hint of a smile on his face I watch the ole' Red, White and Blue pass me. For the next 12 miles I'm doing the walk/ run thing trying to keep the legs from craming.I did finish, not with a time I'm proud of and looking back I didn't learn anything I didn't already know in my mind but now I learned it from experience and I can promise you I won't soon forget.

The good news is I live to run another day!!!!!

From Hillbilly Runner on Mon, Aug 06, 2012 at 15:41:18 from 207.162.187.46

A steady build-up of 10-15% a week in mileage as long as the foot cooperates with cross training on the bikes. From the way things went today it might be a good time to give the foot a couple days rest and then take it from there. It was a "BIG BUMMER" today but I'm hoping it just one of those things and it won't be a big set back.

From Hillbilly Runner on Thu, Aug 16, 2012 at 11:49:09 from 207.162.187.46

Not as good as I'd hoped for but we'll see. Got up this morning and the foot didn't feel any worst than if I hadn't ran yesterday so that's a good sign. The pain is kind of moving around, not as much heel pain as it's along the outside part of my foot now so maybe it's getting better ??? I'll rest it tomorrow and try it again Sat. afternoon.

The foot felt a lot better this morning even after running on it the last couple days. I've been on my feet a lot at work today walking and going up and down stairs and can really tell it but all in all it's coming around. I've just got to be patient keep it slow and easy the next couple weeks.

What do you think?

Not happening here, I'm just not wired that way!!!!! I'd go "CRAZY"

You're probably right and I appreciate the advice but seriously I've got to be doing something and bikng really seems to loosen the foot up and keeps me from going crazy. It's amazing how much you miss running(pain free)when you can't.

Spent the day at the Riverfront at the foot of broadway in Paducah rowing a Dragon boat with 20 friends and 25 other teams for a charity event. This was the first year for this event. Dragon boat racing is new to this area and proved to be quite the challenge but at the same time a "lot of fun". It was a beautiful day for this event 70's sunny but the wind did get up later on in the afternoon which contributed to a couple of the teams boat turning over, luckly we were not one of them. We finished the day in the middle of the pack with our last time just one second off the best time of the day.It took us a couple of heats to figure out were to position everybody in the boat and how to keep everybody in sync.

I'm in Boston 2013 !!!!! but I've got to get my training in for the Surf City first. The foot is doing a lot better. I can actually run relaxed and with a normal stride now. I hoping I'll be back to 100% in a couple weeks, then I'll start ramping up the longer runs. The "ING" will be hear before you know it and it looks like your going to be on top of your game. I'm counting the days down till it's "Surf and Sun" time and oh there's also a marathon to run.I think the foot is going to come around. I'm increasing my longer runs and my mileage every week and it hasn't seem to hurt it any. I think I'll still wait a couple more weeks then I'll start throwing in some track work and harder tempo runs if it still feels alright and I should be ready. From Hillbilly Runner on Thu, Nov 08, 2012 at 15:39:41 from 207.162.186.109

I'm just trying to keep this old body in some kind of shape but I have to admit I love grinding it out on either the mountain or road bike. The good news is my foot is feeling "GREAT" and the groin muscle that I pulled in the bike crash is coming along, so even though I'm losing some valuable training time for Surf city I think I'll come back 100% when I start running again. The plan is to try and start back either Sunday or Monday with some shorter runs at low speed and if everything feels good start ramping things up and be ready for Feburary.

13 mile on the single track on a "Great" morning.

Tomorrow morning before church I'll finally get to try this old body out to see if I can get back to training. Right now I'm very optimistic !!!!

Well S#@^ !!!!!!!

I really thought a week off would put to rest the groin and foot issues but no such luck. I could tell in the first tenth that things weren't good. Now that's the bad news the good news is even though things weren't good they didn't seem to get any worse. The foot felt good but the groin hurt and was weak ( if that makes any sense). After running I went to church, to eat with a group from church then I hit the gym for a good stretching and workout which felt good. ????????

PM workout after work and against the good advice of Mr. Slick I ran 4 miles. The good news is it went rather well. I decided that the best approach might be the dreaded tread mill so that's what I did. I really can't expain it but the treadmill doesn't bother my injuries near as bad as pounding the pavement outside does.

Another "Good" sign is everything still feels good this morning !!!!!!!!

Glad to hear that your workout didn't aggrivate your injury....

From Hillbilly Runner on Wed, Nov 21, 2012 at 10:48:07 from 173.191.121.34

I'm taking it as slow and easy as I can but I've got to get some running miles in or I won't be ready for Surf City. I really know the best thing for me to do is transfer to the half for this one but here's my mind set. If I can get some training in I could run the full as more or less a long training run for Boston but if I transfer to the half I'll run it harder than I probably should and open myself up to reinjuring something. My wife would be telling me "That I'm thinking and planning to much" which I probably am.

AM 13 mile MTB ride, it didn't take long to get woke up with the temps in the 30's with a lite breeze coming off the water. It doesn't get much better this time of year!!!!!

Also went by the gym for a little stretching and a good " hot" shower. The good news is the foot and groin are feeling pretty "Good". Now if I can just be patient and not push it too much I think I'll be OK for the Surf City Marathon in Feb. with Mr. Slick.

WOW!!!! What a difference a week makes. Even though things aren't 100% they are tons better than they were last Sunday. There's still some tenderness in the groin causing me to favor it a little also a few little aches and pains but I think things will work themselves out in the next couple weeks as my body get back in the groove of running. A beautiful morning to run before church 30's and sunny.

Hello Teena, not a lot to see here just trying to get my tail back on the road after a couple nagging injuries. How's things with you ??

Slick, that was a x-training w/o to try and keep things going and give these legs a day of rest. If something else don't happen I'll be ready in time for SURF CITY USA. I'm just about a month behind but I can't worry about that I'll just take what this old body will give me and work with that.

Not a fast run by no means but a pain free run which makes things a whole lot more enjoyable. It's amazing how much more you can concentract on your overall form(stride-turnover) when everything feels like it should.
