Was going to run an easy 8-10 but nursing a sore foot. I think I'll try an easy bike ride to get a little cardio in.
8 days till Show Time in Bean Town !!!!!!!!!
| | Easy and gingerly ran 3 miles to see how the foot would respond. I was very encouraged with the outcome, hopefully I'll be 100% come Monday but I don't think the Elite runners have anything to worry about. |
| |
Great morning to run sunny and in the 40"s. I gave the foot the test today and everything seems to be OK as long as I don't make any lateral moves. My little toe is still sore and the base of my toes are still swelled but I can live with that. I'm still a little concerned that this may give me some problems in the later miles of the marathon but I'm staying positive that it won't.

Let me start by saying this was a Great Boston even though I had a very bad marathon and it goes without saying a horrible finishing time to prove it. Enjoing this great race is so much more than the marathon itself. It's starts from the road to qualifying and all the dreams you dream as you put in hundreds of miles training, to all the people you meet in the airports as you make your way to this historical race. It's the excitment in the air at the Expo and all the runners cramming in their last carbs at the pasta dinner. The waiting in lines to hurry up and get on the buses for the long ride to Atheletes Village only to wait again. Then it's time to make your way to the corrals and the last trips to the POP's. Then the wave starts moving and you're off and running and you realize that after all this time it's time to do what you came here to do "Run".
I can't say enough about all the volunteers and the hundred of thousands of people cheering all along the way. When you're stuggling and having to walk you get to meet a lot more of these people and at times this is all that kept me going.
This years Boston experience started off with meeting up with Tom Slick at the Raddison then off to the Expo. That night I enjoyed a wonderful Chinese meal with Susanna and Larry, Teena and Ryan, Lark and Jeff, Marcie and her son Jeff , Mindy, Lloyd, Andy and his wife Becky and some others I didn't get to meet. After a good nights sleep we were up and ready to run (jog) the Boston 5K. I didn't know if this was going to be a good idea but after doing it I think it's a good way to get the legs going again and it's a blast to do. Then keeping with our Boston tradition it was back to the room for a very relaxing 2 hour nap and then off to the Pre-marathon Pasta party with some friends. After a good nights sleep it was time to meet everybody for the walk to the buses and the long ride to Athletes Village.
Now, to the good, the bad and the ugly about the marathon. I'll keep this very short, even though it was probably the longest 4+ hour of my life. After going over and revising (because of the weather conditions) all our race plans that we had trained so hard for the last 4 months to accomplish it was time to head to the starting corrals. Lloyd, Teena and myself dropped off our bags at the buses and made the walk down the hill to the buses. Lloyd left us to make his way to his corral as me and Teena made one last quick pit stop at the POP, as we got back to the side walk we heard the announcer say it was 2 minutes till the start of our wave and we were still a ways from our corral. As time was running out we got in the closes corral we could which was the one behind were we were going and with one quick move and a catch me if you can look Teena darts in as the guy tells her she can't and the second wave was off. I had planned to stick with my orginal MP for the first few miles and then as thing got hotter I'd back off and try and hold a 30 to 45 second slower pace the rest of the way "BAD IDEA". The first 8 miles went pretty good but I never did feel like I got relaxed and into a groove so I kept backing off and off till the wheels finally fell off about mile 14. About that time with my mind in a fog I hear the cheers "GO TOM SLICK" and out of the corner of my eye I see a red flash and sure enough it's old glory himself. With a determined look and a hint of a smile on his face I watch the ole' Red, White and Blue pass me. For the next 12 miles I'm doing the walk/ run thing trying to keep the legs from craming.I did finish, not with a time I'm proud of and looking back I didn't learn anything I didn't already know in my mind but now I learned it from experience and I can promise you I won't soon forget.
The good news is I live to run another day!!!!!

Afternoon run that started out nice but I started having some pain in my left thigh after a couple miles so I stretched it out and walked a little till it felt better then took off again. After about a mile it did it again so I cut my run short and went home and R.I.C.E.ed it. It's not feeling bad now so I might take the day off from running tomorrow, hit the gym in the morning and give it a good stretching and see what happens Wednesday. |

| | Spent the day at the Riverfront at the foot of broadway in Paducah rowing a Dragon boat with 20 friends and 25 other teams for a charity event. This was the first year for this event. Dragon boat racing is new to this area and proved to be quite the challenge but at the same time a "lot of fun". It was a beautiful day for this event 70's sunny but the wind did get up later on in the afternoon which contributed to a couple of the teams boat turning over, luckly we were not one of them. We finished the day in the middle of the pack with our last time just one second off the best time of the day.It took us a couple of heats to figure out were to position everybody in the boat and how to keep everybody in sync. | |

Got out a little early and hit the MTB trail for a little fun and cross training 13 miles of hammering it on the single track !!!!!! Hotter than normal ( Mid 80's) |
| | Ran after work 80's and very humid but things are going to change tomorrow the high is going to be in the mid 50's, cloudy and north wind with a good chance of rain. We have a bike trip plan for the next two days. It'll be 100+ miles tomorrow then about 70 or so Saturday morning ought to be perfect weather if we don't get wet !!!!!!!! Hey, I don't guess I'd melt anyway ??? |
| |
99.67 mile bike ride to Clarksville Tn. on a cold (40's) rainy (90 miles worth) windy day. One bike crash, three flats and several stops to dry out and warm up we were safely in our hotel room. Every year this bike ride becomes an adventure but this year was one of the toughest but looking back I wouldn't have it any other way. |
| | 65.7 mile bike ride on another crisp day temps at the start in the 40's, it did get in the low 50's by the afternoon but didn't feel very warm because of the clouds and a stiff north wind but life was good at least it wasn't raining. Really it was quite an enjoyable ride from Clarksville to Nashville.Actually I made my way through downtown Nashville to about 15 miles south to Franklin Tn . I rode on highway 31 which took me past some of the most beautiful houses and residential areas Nashville has to offer. My wife and my best freind(our Boxer) drove down to meet me. We had supper with a friend from work and his wife that was in town to see his favorite country star at the Grand ole' Opry. Then we enjoyed a little shopping and some ice cream and a good night sleep. |
| | Ran after getting back from Nashville. The legs felt tried and heavy so I took it slow and easy. |
| | AM workout I'm taking a day or two rest from cardio. I"m feeling the effects of the bike crash. One good thing about the rest it's giving my foot time to heal even if I have to take it easy the rest of the week I think I have plenty of time to get ready for Surf City in Feb. |
| | AM workout and a easy easy 3 mile run. I had to test the waters to see how the body was feeling. Not to bad I think I'll be ready to kick the marathon training back in full swing by the end of the week. |
| |
Morning run, a little faster and a little longer than yesterday. I think this old body might be coming around and I can get back to marathon training.

AM workout
Today was going to be a reat day to give this old body time to heal but I just couldn't resist the call of the trail on a beautiful fall afternoon soooo,. I caved in and went 13 miles of MTB'ing. It doesn't get any better !!!!!!!! |
| | MTB'ing 13 miles of single track. The foot and strains from the bike crash are feeling really good but I'm still taking the next couple of days off pounding the pavement so maybe I'll be back to near 100% come Sunday. I'll ease back into my marathon training plan next week ramping up the mileage and intensity. I can't hardly wait ,it's amazing how much you miss running when you can't run for a few days. |
| | Another crosstraining day 14 miles of MTB'ing |
| | Total rest day from the gym and cardio |
| |
AM workout after work

| |
Afternoon run after work to see how things would feel. I was a little disappointed but I'll see how things feel tomorrow.

AM workout.
I had it in the back of my mind to try and run this morning if everything felt alright but backed off that idea because of the groin being a little tight and sore this morning. The good news is it didn't have that weakness to it so things are getting better and also things felt better after the workout. I'll either try a run this afternoon or hit the bike for a good cardio workout.
20 mile road ride 18 mph avg on hilly course. It felt good to push it!!!! I wish I could "RUN"
I did try it (run) a couple times today but the body just won't let me.
| |
AM workout and bike ride
13 miles on the trail. It was kind of slick because of the rain yesterday and all the leaves so I took it nice a easy but still got a good workout. |
| | Afternoon workout. The foot and groin are feeling good today so maybe everything is finally going to get back to normal. I'm still going to try and make it to Sunday before trying to run. I'll try and keep the cardio going the next few days on the bike. One good thing is I've been hitting the gym hard with stretching and the weights so I feel like I've built some muscle and also kept my weight down. |
| |
Great afternoon road ride 50 and sunny.

Afternoon road ride 20 miles |

13 mile on the single track on a "Great" morning.
Tomorrow morning before church I'll finally get to try this old body out to see if I can get back to training. Right now I'm very optimistic !!!! |
| |
Well S#@^ !!!!!!!
I really thought a week off would put to rest the groin and foot issues but no such luck. I could tell in the first tenth that things weren't good. Now that's the bad news the good news is even though things weren't good they didn't seem to get any worse. The foot felt good but the groin hurt and was weak ( if that makes any sense). After running I went to church, to eat with a group from church then I hit the gym for a good stretching and workout which felt good. ????????
| |
23 miles back and forth to work on the old road bike.
I'm going to change my name from Hillbilly Runner to "Goose Egg" if I can't get back to running and post something besides "Zero's".
| |
PM workout after work and against the good advice of Mr. Slick I ran 4 miles. The good news is it went rather well. I decided that the best approach might be the dreaded tread mill so that's what I did. I really can't expain it but the treadmill doesn't bother my injuries near as bad as pounding the pavement outside does.
8:00 avg. pace
Another "Good" sign is everything still feels good this morning !!!!!!!!
| |
Afternoon workout and run after work. The treadmill has become my "Best" friend for now, it's got me back in the running game. I think I"ll stick to the treadmill for the next few runs to ease my body back into the running groove.
7:35 avg pace
Everything stills feels "Good" again this morning !!!!!! |

20 mile road ride while the turkey was cooking. It started out with what seemed to be slow pace because of a stiff headwind but I got it all back and then some on the way back home.

AM run on the treadmill, I started out going to run steady 8's but got sooooo bored that I had to occupy myself by playing with the speed. I ended up running faster than I probably shoud've but I'll take the day off running tomorrow and hit the bike trail.

AM 13 mile MTB ride, it didn't take long to get woke up with the temps in the 30's with a lite breeze coming off the water. It doesn't get much better this time of year!!!!!
Also went by the gym for a little stretching and a good " hot" shower. The good news is the foot and groin are feeling pretty "Good". Now if I can just be patient and not push it too much I think I'll be OK for the Surf City Marathon in Feb. with Mr. Slick. |

WOW!!!! What a difference a week makes. Even though things aren't 100% they are tons better than they were last Sunday. There's still some tenderness in the groin causing me to favor it a little also a few little aches and pains but I think things will work themselves out in the next couple weeks as my body get back in the groove of running. A beautiful morning to run before church 30's and sunny.

AM workout before work
Afternoon run after work 70's. I felt better on this run than I have in the last several months. I started out with a 1 mile wu then picked the pace up the next 5 miles (7-7:10 avg) the last couple miles was a slower cooldown. Not a fast run by no means but a pain free run which makes things a whole lot more enjoyable. It's amazing how much more you can concentract on your overall form(stride-turnover) when everything feels like it should. I"ll take tomorrow off from running to give everything a rest. I think me and my daughters boy friend are going to see the movie Lincoln tomorrow night, That sounds like a Good night !!!!

AM workout before work to give the muscles a good stretch and workout.
Afternoon MTB ride after work, good thing we finished up work a little early and was able to hit the trail early because it started raining and got dark quicker tonight. We still had time to get a good ride in and didn't get too wet doing it. 13 miles of "Good" times! |

Another good morning workout after work.
Easy afternoon run 50 and sunny. No garmin |

I was headed to the gym to endure a long run on the treadmill when I got a break in the rain so I headed out. My goal today was not speed but a steady pace and to spend some time pounding the pavement to build up some endurance. "Mission Accomplished" and just in time, it started raining again just about the time I got finished.

Got in an easy Christmas morning run after opening presents.
I hope everybody has a "Merry Christmas" I know I sure did !! |
| | We had a littile snow last night so took my daughter to work and worked out at the gym before coming home. It was hard not to hit the treadmill for a few easy miles but I had a rest day planned in prep for a long run tomorrow. It's so hard not to over do it when you start feeling good after working your way back from an injury !!!! | |
| |
Good old long run today to work off all this over eating that I've done over the holidays and "Boy" could I tell it. Nice day for a run 30 degrees slight breeze and cloudy with still a little snow on the roads. Not a very fast pace but I ran a course with lots and lots of hills, not a lot of huge one but a lot of them.

| | Afternoon run 30 cloudy, windy and snowing huge flakes, needless to say it wasn't a day for shorts but I had a good run anyway. I didn't wear my garmin because I didn't want to be tempted to run any faster than a good steady "easy" pace. | |
